Taxi cabs appear to be the new frontier for vending machines. New Orleans Carriage Cab passengers can now get more than a ride to their chosen destination– for an added $0.99 they can help themselves to a soft drink.

Now installed in more than 200 taxis, the vending machine available to Carriage Cab passengers sells five different non-alcoholic beverages for less than a dollar. All you need is a credit or debit card.

The taxi company’s owner cites New Orleans’ dedication to innovation and commitment to hospitality as the impetus behind the vending machine’s launch in the Big Easy.

Beverage options include Coke, Diet Coke, Dr. Pepper, Sprite, iced tea and orange Fanta. Each vending machine holds 36 drinks and aluminum cans are recycled weekly.

The owner of New Orelans Carriage Cab and Yellow-Checker Cab credits his son with the idea to offer passengers soft drinks in taxis.
